Member notes for Ian Dunkley
Attended MNC (Worcester) from in the OND
class. There were six of us including David Maidment (also Blue Star),
Malcolm Stares and John Stannes? (who were the other two?). Went
to sea with Blue Star Line until 1975 then coastal mate / master with
British Dredging in Bristol Channel until 1979. Married in 1974 to Jane
(who I had met at the dance (disco?) we held in Ingress Abbey in summer
term 1970 which was almost certainly the last ever function held there
before it was allowed to fall into ruin). 1979 moved back to Kent
and worked in the Marine Paint industry selling paint to Shipowners in
London until 1985 when (due to redundancy) I returned to "sea" with the
Marine Society Training Ship JONAS HANWAY as Training Officer. 1991
joined the Maritime Trust at the CUTTY SARK, Greenwich as Chief Officer
/ Restoration Manager and supervised the complete rebuild of masts and
rigging and some major hull repairs. September 2001 joined the
RNLI as Station Manager at Gravesend for the new Thames Lifeboat
Service set up following the Thames Safety Enquiry. I joined the
Royal Naval Reserve in 1976 as a Sub Lieutenant and only retired last
year as a Commander having been Commanding Officer of HMS PRESIDENT,
the RNR Training Centre in London from . We have 3 children, Sarah 24, James 20 and Laura 16 and live in Gravesend. Anyone
who remembers me as the probably rather pompous and overbearing last
Chief Cadet Captain of the old Worcester would be welcome to get in
touch! (I think quite a few got their own back by the end of the last
term as Richard Ruegg suggests!) |
