Brett, in case you are wondering how, I looked on the internet and found two likely leads, one was a mention in a Royal Yacht Club article, and the other was from an Australian motor cycle club. Anyway I Emailed both, and the RYA came up trumps, so I phoned the telephone number and had a chat with your wife for about 10 - 15 minutes. There is a good site called www.greenhithe.org.uk run by Paul Bird. Have a look. Quite a lot of us have sent Paul a bit of potted history so there is a lot of news there. I will get round to phoning you shortly. I have also located Taffy Walters, Mike Bailey and Stewart Hobbs. I did get hold of Taffy's phone number and also spoke to his wife. He had just left for Mexico earlier in the week, but is back in mid November, so I will contact him then. He and Mike and Stewart play golf together quite regularly. Mike lives in or near Bracknell and works for Compaq. Stewart lives in Wootton Bassett. I have tried a few telephone numbers on the off chance, and have spoken to lots of Baileys and Hobbs - all very nice people but the wrong ones. I will have to wait until Taffy comes back to get directly in touch with them. Chris, great to hear you news and info. Are you still full time at sea now or partly shore based ? You are right we are talking about Mark Weatherall (Richard Weatherill is someone I knew even longer ago). There was someone else who worked for LOF as well as Mark and ??? Philpott (lived in Dover). He was quite tall (but most people still are to me) and thin and had sandyish hair - may have had a mustache for a while - ring any bells ? Tony Anderton is a Bristol Channel Pilot having left Mobil. I Emailed him the other day. He also knew some of the Turnbull Scott crowd in the group a year or so ahead of us. I haven't had a reply from Tony yet. Steve - have you had any results phoning around yet ? -----Original Message----- From: Steve Foster [mailto:] Sent: 27 October 2001 13:03 To: Shrimpton, Patrick D. Thinking about MNC, here's a few more: Remember the Sugar Line guys, who were taken on by Mobil. Originally there was Mike Bell, Tony Anderton and Roy Murray (Yamaha RD250 - hung around with Eric Froude) Well, I did Mates at Warsash and Roy was there also. Lived just around the corner in Locks Heath and had a concours Ducati 900ss Darmah. Worked for Stolt tankers. Probably still in the Hampshire area as he seemed to be getting settled there. (March 1986) Also there was another guy, also Sugar Line/Mobil ec.MNC by the name of Martin Hughes. Cannot recall him at MNC but definitely knew him from there. We did Masters together at Warsash. He lived just outside Manchester (March 1989). I saw his name in the Nautical Institute as I believe he just got his first command in Mobil 3-4 months ago. Also, I saw a Tony Anderton name in the same magazine, and as I recall was from the same area as Tony before - probably the same guy. By the way, off on another note, same magazine, remember John Taverner ex. Opalia - Tetleys man from Leeds. Well he is a freelance surveyor with Lloyds Register (6 months ago) Keith Denney bought a house in Yaxley, just outside Peterborough and was getting settled down to get married. During my first trip with Island Nav we berthed next to a Buries Markes bulker in Newport News - we were both loading coal for Spain. On the BM ship - the Gallant Lion (aka "Gay Lion") was an ex. Shell C/O who took voluntary reduncy and got a job with BM and promotion after 1 contract. Anyway, from that I tipped Keith off for a job with BM as he was sitting at home doing nothing after being made red. from Pan-Anco and he was off the following week working for Buries on their coastal chemical tanker fleet. In OOCL, I worked with a guy alled Jerry Ayling, also we were at Warsash together (I was 6 months ahead of him doing Masters whilst he was doing doing Mates/Masters combined). Anyway he was ex. MNC and was there when Tiny was doing his resit - he knew Tiny quite well as they played rugby together. Jerry is presently working as a Marine Consultant in London. Pete Collins did Mates at Warsash the same time as me. Andy was right, he was working on the Anastasis II, a volunteer on the Christian Missionary ship. Had a Dutch girlfriend at the time (dancer). He failed Mates orals (the examiner failed him in about 3 minutes because he was'nt wearing a suit and tie). Lost contact after that. That's about it for now, whilst I have another think.
